About Connie -

Connie taught patternmaking and fashion design classes for 23 years at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. She has also authored numerous books including A Guide to Fashion Sewing, The Art of Fashion Draping, and Patternmaking Made Easy. Her 35+ years of experience in the garment industry led to the creation of her own pattern and clothing lines for mature and full-figured women. She now frequently travels throughout the country lecturing at various expos, sewing organizations, and conventions.

In the past 5 years, Connie has taught seminars and lectures for many ASG and PACC groups, the National ASG Conference for the past four years, American Stitches Expos, Rusty Barn Expos, PCM Expos, and for the past 15 years has lectured at OCC Fall Fair.

Connie’s qualifications and extensive background led her to perfecting a sewing, patternmaking, and draping program useful for professionals as well as non-professionals. Her classes are taught at the same professional level she used at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. The simplified agenda teaches time-tested techniques that can easily be adapted for personal or professional use.

Overview of Seminar Contents -

The goal of the seminars offered is to simplify the learning process of sewing, fitting, and patternmaking by presenting it in a very logical manner. Connie’s practical methods open the doors of creativity by providing the correct solutions to common sewing and fitting problems. Once learned, the techniques can be applied to existing clothing patterns or they can guide in starting from “scratch”. Once practiced, these skills will expand the sewing realm into an exciting adventure!

The following information is covered through the various lectures and seminars offered:

  • How a design becomes a pattern.
  • Fitting and draping directly on a live model.
  • How the various master patterns (slopers) are made and used.
  • Creating correct pattern balance through side seam, armhole, sleeve, and waistline balances.
  • How to make a sleeve from scratch.
  • How to adjust sleeves so that they move and fit correctly.
  • How to create a variety of sleeve designs.
  • Pattern techniques for styling bodices, blouses and shirts, dresses, princess seams, necklines, plackets and yoke designs, and collar designs.
  • Drafting a pant and skirt pattern with your own body measurements (This draft also covers difficult-to-fit bodies such as matured figures and plus size figures. Using your custom pattern as a guide, learn how to also create your own designs such as fashion jeans, elastic waists pants, pleated pants, palazzo pants, culottes, overalls, and a large variety of skirt designs.)
  • How to make a custom dress form within an hour.
  • How to choose correct interfacing for your sewing projects.
